Porsche launches the new 911 Turbo S, the most powerful production Porsche to date

Porsche has launched its updated 911 Turbo S, which, thanks to its new twin-turbo T-Hybrid powertrain, makes it the most powerful production 911 in history.  

Porsche has launched the most powerful production 911 to date, the new 911 Turbo S, at the IAA Mobility trade show in Munich. The latest iteration of the range-topping 911 sports 701hp, a 60hp bump up from its predecessor, and 800Nm of torque. 

The huge power comes courtesy of Porsche’s T-Hybrid system, first introduced on the 911 Carrera GTS, but now features as a twin-turbo setup on the Turbo S, combined with a 3.6-litre flat-six engine. The whole system is then mated to an 8-speed PDK gearbox for lightning-fast shifts.

The result of this holy matrimony is a century sprint in just 2.5 seconds and 0 to 200km/h in just 8.4 seconds, 0.2 seconds and 0.5 seconds faster than the previous Turbo S, respectively. The top speed of the 911 Turbo S now sits at an even loftier 322km/h.

Despite the additional componentry involved with the T-Hybrid system, the new 911 Turbo S only gains 85kg over its predecessor, but Porsche claims that the weight increase has been more than compensated for in terms of driving dynamics. 

That claim seems to be factual, with a new Nurburgring Nordschleife laptime around 14 seconds faster than the previous Turbo S. Porsche Brand Ambassador, Jorg Bergmeister, said, “You don’t feel the weight gain. The car is more agile, has more grip, and is significantly faster than its predecessor in all relevant sections of the track.”

To accomplish the heightened driving performance, the new Turbo S uses a new generation of tyres, including rear tyres 10mm wider than on the previous car. The new Turbo S also has ceramic brakes fitted as standard, as well as the largest brake discs ever fitted to a two-door Porsche.

For increased aerodynamic performance and efficiency, the new Turbo S also features active air flaps and an active front diffuser that work together with the front spoiler’s variable lip and the active rear wing to provide maximum downforce while reducing drag. 

The chassis itself has also been improved thanks to the inclusion of the T-Hybrid and its accompanying high-voltage electrical and battery system. This has allowed Porsche to equip the Turbo S with electro-hydraulically controlled Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (ehPDCC) as standard, improving both driving comfort and driving dynamics. 

Aesthetically, the new Turbo S features a visibly wider body and track compared to Carrera models with centre lock wheels and other accents finished in Turbonite. The interior is also accented in Turbonite.
